TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE wins Best Documentary Feature at 80th Academy Awards

THINKFilm major player in the category with two wins in four years and six nominations in six years    February 25, 2008

Alex Gibney's TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE has won Best Documentary Feature at this year's Academy Awards. The film, which opened to universal acclaim in exclusive engagements on January 18, is currently entering national release. This was Gibney's second shot at Oscar gold after his documentary on corporate scandals, "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2005 Academy Awards.

"I'm thrilled," said director Alex Gibney. "The embrace of the Academy means so much and I thank them again for this recognition. Hopefully this will encourage more and more people to see the film and reckon with the important issues told through Dilawar's story."

In its short existence, THINKFilm has helped transform the way documentary film is perceived in the marketplace, with six Oscar nominations in the last six years in the Documentary Feature category with "Spellbound" in 2002, "The Story of the Weeping Camel" and "Born into Brothels," which went onto win for Best Documentary Feature in 2004, "Murderball" in 2005, and "War/Dance" this year along with TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE. THINKFilm also had two other documentaries that were shortlisted this year - Tony Kaye's LAKE OF FIRE, and Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman's NANKING - making it a total of 15 films shortlisted in this category.

Of the victory, THINKFilm's Theatrical Head Mark Urman says, "This was an extraordinarily strong year for non-fiction films and we couldn't be more proud to share this honor with the great Alex Gibney. A distinction of this magnitude will surely help TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE reach the audience it deserves now and for years to come."

Additionally, TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE was recently acquired by HBO Documentary Films and will debut on HBO in September 2008. This marks the second time THINKFilm has partnered with HBO on an Oscar-winning documentary, previously with "Born into Brothels" in 2004.

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE examines the death of an Afghan taxi driver at Bagram Air Base from injuries inflicted by U.S. soldiers. In an unflinching look at the Bush administration's policy on torture, filmmaker Alex Gibney takes us from a village in Afghanistan to Guantanamo and straight to the White House.
