THINKFilm, Lifetime Networks and Netflix Acquire Sundance Hit 'Phoebe in Wonderland' in Ground-Breaking Collaboration
New York March 10, 2008
In an innovative new partnership, THINKFilm, Lifetime Networks and Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment (REE) have acquired the North American rights to Daniel Barnz's PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND, which recently had its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and stars Patricia Clarkson, Elle Fanning, Felicity Huffman, Bill Pullman, and Campbell Scott. The deal was jointly announced today by Mark Urman, THINKFilm's Theatrical Division Head, Susanne Daniels, President, Entertainment, Lifetime Networks, and Liesl Copland, Head of Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment.
THINKFilm will release this film in exclusive engagements this fall. Lifetime will have exclusive television rights and will premiere the film under the Lifetime Pictures banner, and Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment will have non-exclusive DVD and streaming rights. All three entities will join forces in the branding and marketing of the indie drama.
Commenting on the ground-breaking deal, Lynette Howell from Silverwood Films said, "Daniel Barnz is an extraordinary emerging filmmaker and we couldn't be more thrilled to be partnering with THINKFilm, who has established itself as a distribution company with a thoughtful and meticulous approach to independent film, especially the work of new directors under the very creative and collaborative leadership of Mark Urman. This three-way partnership with THINKFilm, Lifetime, and Netflix's REE is a unique and incredibly creative structure which maximizes the exposure of the movie to audiences, whilst being profitable for the financiers and allowing for independent filmmakers in the future not to solely rely on the bidding war scenarios we have seen at Sundance in the past." Added writer and director Daniel Barnz, an established screenwriter who was also listed on Variety's "Top Ten Directors to Watch" this year: "When you finally make a film you've been dreaming of making for ten years, you can only pray for a distributor as savvy, intelligent and visionary as THINKFilm. And I'm incredibly honored that the film got the vote of confidence from Lifetime and Netflix's REE as well. They all understand that this is a film about how being different makes you stronger, and that the audience for that kind of story is limitless. The film couldn't be in better hands."
About the acquisition, THINKFilm's Mark Urman said, "We are thrilled to be working once again with Lynette Howell and Silverwood Films on this beautifully acted and deeply touching film. We are also really excited about working with such effective, motivated and resourceful partners as Lifetime and Netflix's REE so that PHOEBE can reach the widest possible audience."
"We're truly pleased to be able to bring to Lifetime a project that speaks so beautifully to women. This is clearly a passion project for the filmmakers and it's obvious that's why it was the most talked about film at Sundance this year," said Lifetime's Susanne Daniels. Adding, "I'm thrilled to be in business with THINKFilm and Netflix's REE. This agreement represents the kinds of interesting and unique partnerships we are continuing to establish at Lifetime. Thanks must also go to Endeavor's Graham Taylor for all his hard work executing this wonderful collaboration."
"We are delighted to be embarking on our first project with ThinkFilm which will give our more than seven million members access to a wonderful film through DVD or by streaming it to their PC" said REE's Liesl Copland. "We are equally pleased to collaborate with Lifetime Television and are grateful to Endeavor for realizing the benefits of this unique three-way partnership."
Based on Barnz's original screenplay, PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND concerns a young girl (Elle Fanning) who longs to be in her school's production of "Alice in Wonderland." After being cast in the lead role of Alice by her eccentric drama teacher (Patricia Clarkson), Phoebe reveals a unique talent but, much like Alice herself, is increasingly at odds with the world around her and begins to retreat into a world of her imagination. Though her parents (Felicity Huffman and Bill Pullman) initially see their daughter's unusual behavior as signs of creativity, they gradually realize that Phoebe is at risk of falling "through the looking glass."
PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND is written and directed by Daniel Barnz, produced by Ben Barnz and Lynette Howell ("Half Nelson"), executive produced by Doug Dey and Chris Finazzo, with cinematography by Bobby Bukowski, editing by Robert Hoffman, and original music by Christophe Beck. The film stars Patricia Clarkson, Elle Fanning, Felicity Huffman, Bill Pullman, and Campbell Scott.
In a coordinated effort to bring together the right mix of theatrical, broadcast and DVD partners, Graham Taylor from Endeavor Independent and UTA's Rich Klubeck negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers with THINKFilm's Urman and Richard Rapkowski, THINKFilm Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs, Jeffrey Schneider, Lifetime Networks Senior VP of Business Affairs and Deputy General Counsel, and Thom Zadra, Red Envelope Entertainment's Head of Business Affairs.
