DISCOVERY FILMS PARTNERS WITH THINKFILM AND IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT TO DISRIBUTE WERNER HERZOG.S ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD
SILVER SPRING, MD March 12, 2008
Discovery Films announced today that it has secured North American theatrical, home video and DVD distribution for its film, ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD. THINKFilm will spearhead theatrical distribution of the documentary this summer on June 11, 2008 with Image Entertainment and Image will handle DVD and digital sales. Written, directed and produced by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn), the film offers his singular perspective on Earth's most remote and intriguing continent and the people who call it home. The deal was negotiated by Josh Braun of Submarine, Jason Beck of Image Entertainment and Mark Urman of THINKFilm. "We are delighted to work with THINKFilm and Image to bring ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD to theaters, DVD and home video" said Andrea Meditch, vice president, Discovery Films. "Once again, Werner Herzog immerses us in a world we think we know, but that we have never really seen before. His vision of and journey through Antarctica is deeply compelling and provides a fascinating, strange and captivating portrait of a continent that attracts characters as diverse and mysterious as the place itself." "With Werner Herzog, Discovery Films has produced an incredible feature, and we are pleased to be releasing it theatrically," said Jason Beck, vice president of acquisitions for Image Entertainment. "Image and Discovery have worked together for many years and we're glad to continue that relationship with this film from such an iconic director." "We are honored to be working with the legendary Werner Herzog on this, his latest film. We are very proud of the consistently high caliber of our non-fiction films, and ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD is a brilliant addition to our slate," added Mark Urman, THINKFilm Theatrical Division Head. ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD is Herzog's first theatrical documentary since Grizzly Man. The film, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2007, was filmed entirely on location by Herzog and his gifted cameraman, Peter Zeitlinger. Hailed as "a well crafted, sweeping yet intimate journey into a part of the world most of us will never go," Herzog's personal journey to uncover the reality of Antarctica challenges the popular image of the continent. He launches from the continent's largest settlement, McMurdo Naval Base, a place Herzog calls an "ugly mining town" filled with "abominations" like aerobic studios, yoga classes and ATMs. It is at this point that ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD gradually begins to reveal the continent's otherworldly beauty and introduces the people, the "professional dreamers," that Herzog meets along the way. Upon leaving McMurdo, Herzog soon pays a memorable visit to a survival training camp that humorously -- yet vividly -- highlights the dangers of living and working in literally blinding conditions. Within the "seemingly endless void" beyond, he finds undersea creatures that appear to come straight out of science fiction, travels to the rim of Mount Erebus -- a massive, bubbling volcano that is home to one of the world's only visible lava lakes -- and follows some of Antarctica's legendary penguins. Herzog even visits a secret ice tunnel with mysterious contents directly under the geographic South Pole and, along the way, provides a nuanced and unique first-person perspective that highlights the strange, funny, beautiful and unpredictable nature of life at the end of the world. ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD is a Creative Differences Production in association with Discovery Films and Discovery Channel. The film was written, directed & narrated by Werner Herzog. Joe Bini served as editor, Peter Zeitlinger is director of photography with original music by Henry Kaiser and David Lindley. For Creative Differences, Erik Nelson is the executive producer, along with Dave Harding and Phil Fairclough. The film is produced by Henry Kaiser with Tree Leyburn as the associate producer. For Discovery Films, Andrea Meditch is executive producer and for Discovery Channel, Julian P. Hobbs is executive producer.
