New York, NY March 29, 2007
Ben Stambler has joined THINKFilm as Director of Acquisitions, it was announced by Mark Urman, Head of US Theatrical, and Randy Manis, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Business Affairs, to whom Stambler will jointly report. Stambler, who will work out of the company's NY office, comes to THINKFilm following three years as Manager of Acquisitions at Magnolia Pictures.
In addition to Stambler's hire, the company announced two key promotions in the Acquisitions Department: Michael Baker, who has been with the company for five years, was previously promoted from Director of Acquisitions & Development to Vice Preident; and David Laub, who has acted as Urman's assistant for the past three years, becomes Manager of Acquisitions.
Of the new appointments, Manis says, "As our company elevates to the next level, it is crucial to fortify the ranks with smart and aggressive executives. Stambler's background and training - and the fact that he doesn't own a suit - make him a perfect fit for us as we begin to acquire bigger films and to co-finance and produce a portion of our slate."
Adds Urman, "Michael Baker's romotion to Vice President was the result of years of dedicated service and enormous growth. With David, who has also come a long way with us, and with the addition of Ben, our acquisitions team is bigger and brighter than it has even been."
While at Magnolia, Stambler played a key role in the acquisition of dozens of titles including "The Signal," "The Host," and "Jesus Camp." He produced Aaron Katz's second feature "Quiet City" which had its world premiere at SXSW in 2007. After attending orth Carolina School of the Arts and earning his B.A. from Emerson College, Ben assisted in Acquisitions and Development at Samuel Goldwyn Films in Los Angeles and worked in documentary production at Two Tone Productions in New York.
Baker, who was instrumental in the acquisition of such THINKFilm titles as FARCE OF THE PENGUINS and IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON, had his first position in the film business as a development intern at Scott Free Productions. He earned his B.A. from McGill University in 1998 Laub, who was key in the company's acquisition of the current hit AVENUE MONTAIGNE, earned his B.A. from Wesleyan in 2003, where he majored in film and English.
THINKFilm's recent acquisitions include the Sundance prizewinners IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON (the Opening Night film at the upcoming Hot Docs) which will be released on September 7th, and WAR/DANCE (which recently played at New Directors/New Films) which will be released in November; the Sundance sensation THE TEN, featuring an ensemblecast including Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba, Adam Brody, Liev Schreiber, Winona Ryder, Gretchen Mol and Ken Marino, which will be released on August 3rd; and THE WENDELL BAKER STORY starring Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson and Eva Mendes, which opens May 18.
